Single-use plastics and fishing gear survey

E Commission logo rThe European Commission has published a stakeholder survey as part of a follow up to the EU Strategy on Plastics scheduled for adoption in January 2018. The objective is to provide input, opinions and data to prepare follow-up to the strategy particularly from single-use plastics and fishing gear.

An Action Plan for a Circular Economy (2015) identified plastics as one of five priority areas, given the low rates of reuse, recycling and littering from single-use items which represent half of all marine litter.

A UN environment programme estimates that damage to the marine environment from marine litter is around US$8bn annually; the forecast suggests by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic than fish. Stakeholders in the maritime sector and the public are invited and encouraged to input to the survey by the closing date of February 12.
