Seven FLAG (Fisheries Local Action Group) programmes, administered by BIM and co-funded by the exchequer and the EU, will receive a total of €12m to support coastal community projects.

Speaking at the launch at Áras Éanna, Inis Oírr, Sean Kyne, Minister of State with responsibility for natural resources, community affairs and digital development, said that the greatest number of approved projects was in FLAG West.

All 33 projects are sensitive to marine heritage and "unique Gaeltacht culture". Many are "true to the natural environment, the coastline or the islands," he remarked.

BIM's chief executive Jim O'Toole said the agency had "worked closely" with FLAG West to enable members to develop and implement "a suite of initiatives" tailored to the specific needs of the region.

"The area is renowned for its established and resourceful fishing, aquaculture and marine tourism activities."

The diverse range of projects, he added, "highlights the value of seafood and the wider marine sector to the country."
